Chet Callahan, a Los Angeles-based architect, has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary architecture, with his work deeply rooted in the history and environment of Southern California. Born and raised in this vibrant region, Callahan formed Chet Architecture, a firm whose designs reflect a profound connection to the local culture, characterized by a blend of playfulness and reverence for historical context. This duality is not just a hallmark of Callahan’s personal design philosophy, but also a response to the eclectic and open-minded community of Los Angeles, particularly on its east side, where he now lives and creativity and entertainment thrive.

A Playful Approach to Living

The essence of Callahan’s architectural practice is his ability to create spaces that resonate with the personalities of his clients while honoring the history and physical context of their locations. “Whenever we start a new project, there are really three things that we’re considering: the site itself, the client and their personalities, and then there’s us and what we bring to the process.”

This approach is vividly illustrated in the renovation of his own Los Angeles home, a project that encapsulates his vision of blending historic preservation with contemporary living. “I think people in Los Angeles don’t take themselves too seriously. There’s a certain playfulness in our work that I think is reflective of our place here in LA.” The house, located in the Los Feliz neighborhood, is one of the oldest in Los Angeles and showcases Callahan’s skill in integrating modern elements with the building’s original character, creating a space that feels both timeless and inherently personal.

Third Time is the Charm

This is the third home Callahan and his husband have built together, all of which have Gaggenau appliances. “Because of my design background, I love the aesthetic of it, the simplicity of the look of it.”

As for his husband, the kitchen needed to emphasize functionality and be the social hub of their home. “My husband likes to entertain. He wants people to feel comfortable there, but he doesn’t want anyone preparing the food except for himself.”

The solution? A unique double island with separate workstations that allows family and guests to congregate and connect around the island kitchen, but not interfere with the practical needs of meal preparation.
