Simply The Best

Gaggenau - The Official Equipment and Appliances Partner of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014.

Organised by Restaurant Magazine, The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is an annual snapshot of the opinions and experiences of over 900 international restaurant industry experts. Assessing which is currently the world’s "best“ dining experience is left to the judgement of these trusted and well-travelled gourmets.

There is no pre-determined check-list of criteria; for example an interesting experience in a simple establishment, where exceptional innovation was discovered, could be judged better than a more opulent meal from a widely feted restaurant team. The results are a simple computation of votes.

Given that this list is based on personal experiences it can never be definitive, but instead, be considered as a survey of current tastes and a credible indicator of the best places to eat around the globe.

In 2013, Gaggenau had the pleasure to sponsor the Highest Climber Award to Gaston Acurio (pictures left) from Astrid y Gastón from Lima in Peru.

Gastón met wife Astrid in Paris, where they had both left behind a traditional career to pursue their shared dream of becoming chefs.

After returning to Peru in 1993, with only a few Peruvian Nuevo Sols to their name, they built their little empire starting with nothing else but their love for each other and their culinary flair.

Their mission: steering away from the popular, highly acclaimed French cuisine and teach Peruvians to rediscover the delights of Peruvian cuisine.

Still relatively unknown in this part of the world, Peruvian cuisine has evolved into a movement to celebrate Peruvian culture and promote it to the rest of the world, heartily sported by advocates Astrid and Gastón.

In 2014, Gaggenau sponsored ‘Chefs’ Choice Award’, a coverted award which is selected by the chefs on the list . This year, the gifted Alex Atala‘s D.O.M. , Sao Paulo, Brazil was nominated by the Chefs as the winner.

Jumping from number 9 to number 6 on the list, D.O.M has played a big part in placing south American cuisine on the gastronomic map. The club-DJ-turned-chef also plays the role of explorer and cultural ambassador by delving deep into the Amazon, aided by scientists and anthropologists, to discover lost ingredients and bring them to his dining room tables to create a truly special experience.
